Returning to driving
Find out about driving after an accident or illness.
Many people return to driving after accident or illness without any difficulty but, especially after more serious illness, it is vital that you discuss this with your doctor first.
Your doctor will be able to confirm whether an immediate return to driving is going to be possible or whether you must stop driving for a period of time. The doctor will also be able to advise whether notification to DVLA is required.
If there is any question about your practical driving ability you or your doctor could contact your local “Driving Mobility” assessment centre to discuss the booking of a practical driving assessment; this would check your medical fitness to drive and look at your in-car driving ability. Following the assessment you would have a de-brief with the assessors and recommendations would be made for the future.
